Lighthouses & Lakeboats
Books by
Wes Oleszewski
|
|
“Mysteries
and Histories” is author Wes Oleszewski’s fifth book in six years.
The text runs 295 pages total and contains 17 true tales of Great
Lakes maritime adventure. Released by Avery in 1997 the book lives
up to its title and documents many of the unsolved shipwrecks on the
lakes.
As always, the author has focused
on the forgotten or over-looked mysteries and histories, so even
the most well-read Great Lakes enthusiast will be able to find something
new within this book.
|
One
of the largest highlights in this text is the author’s correction
of eight decades of incorrect history through his detailed research.
The correction, although it may be considered a simple detail, shows
the author’s ability to place long forgotten events under his microscope.
It involves the departure point of the steamer THOMAS CRANAGE on her
final voyage. Since 1911, publications have printed, in error, that
the vessel was bound from Duluth to Tiffin on her last trip. Wes Oleszewski
researched the story to the point where he discovered that every publication
had used the same source for this information and it was in error.
The CRANAGE never passed through the Soo, and in fact did not depart
from Lake Superior at all, but rather came out of Chicago on her last
trip. For this author, no detail is too small. |
Another highlight is the true tale of
a brave lady of the lakes and her adventure on a Great Lakes shipwreck.
This tale gives keen insight into the living and working conditions
that females experienced more than a century ago. This chapter comes
complete with family photos and will transport any modern lady of
the lakes to a time and place that will make them glad to be living
in the modern era. |

In
reaction to reader’s requests, this book contains more and far better
maps than did previous books. A dozen detailed maps with exploded
views are featured along with detailed vessel drawings including
a cut-away drawing of the THOMAS CRANAGE that takes up two pages.
As in all of his books, rare photographs are also included.
